Creating better futures starts with the choices we make today. Across our business, we’re working to advance the wellbeing of people and the planet by creating communities where people feel seen, heard and valued, while moving toward a net-zero future.

The 2025 Steelcase Impact Report, “Our Work Toward Better Futures,” shares the progress we’re making and the actions we’re taking to create lasting value for our members, customers and communities while building a more resilient business.

Reducing carbon emissions through collective action

Our greatest opportunity to reduce carbon emissions lies in the products we make, which account for roughly 80% of our footprint based on our 2019 baseline. To achieve net zero by 2050, we have committed to reducing our carbon emissions by more than 90% from that baseline while investing in permanent carbon removal and storage to address the remainder.

The report measures progress across our products, operations and value chain:

  • Carbon emissions declined: Scope 1 and 2 emissions fell 33% from 2019 to 2025, toward our goal of a 50% reduction by 2030. Scope 3 emissions from fuel-related and energy-related activities, waste generated in operations and business travel fell 22% during the same time period.
  • Supplier target-setting advanced: By year-end, suppliers accounting for more than half of our supplier-based emissions had set targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. Including suppliers committed to setting targets, that share reached nearly two-thirds.

Product design is central to meeting our net-zero goal. One initiative doubled recycled content across seven of our most popular task chairs in the Americas, reducing embodied carbon by an average of 35% across our task seating portfolio. Our designers and engineers also developed an innovative patent-pending flexible fin structure that eliminated single-use foam from all our top-task seating arm caps in the Americas. Our sustainability focus extends beyond the office, as well. The Steelcase Apprise Collection from Steelcase Health brings thoughtful material choices and longer product life to healthcare environments through durable, cleanable materials and replaceable components.

Progress gains momentum when our members and dealers turn shared ambition into action. Two workshops invited members to explore what circularity could look like, while our global Sustainability Community helps them share knowledge and bring sustainability into everyday decisions. This work extended across our dealer network, where a six-month Dealer Sustainability Workgroup helped dealers assess their practices, set goals and develop sustainability plans.

Creating community around the world

The report emphasizes how our commitment to helping communities thrive spans the world, taking different forms in response to local needs. Progress in 2025 includes:

  • 324 Better Futures Community partnerships across 38 of our 72 locations, working with 200 community partners
  • 20,680 volunteer hours contributed by our members, bringing the total since 2020 to 96,641 toward our goal of 100,000 by 2030
  • 14 Business Inclusion Groups (BIGs) supported connections across Steelcase. The employee-led BIGs co-designed more than 200 cultural learning experiences that reached over 2,000 participants worldwide.

Workplaces bring people together across different experiences, perspectives and backgrounds, creating opportunities to build understanding and trust. Our third annual Better Is Possible Design Challenge brought together 219 Steelcase members, dealers, customers and community partners to explore that opportunity through design thinking. The goal was to help participants apply a design thinking approach to strengthen trust, communication and connection across differences at work and in their communities.

Other efforts reflected the unique needs of local communities. A six-session sign language program engaged 38 members, including nine who are deaf, helping everyone communicate more effectively at a Malaysian manufacturing location. The Women of Steel BIG, a group that empowers learning, connection and inclusion in our India manufacturing plant, offered development, wellbeing and community impact programs, including a new onsite childcare facility. Camp Ignite, co-hosted by Steelcase and the nonprofit organization World Vision, marked 10 years of helping young people in rural Romania explore their strengths, build confidence and shape their futures.

Steelcase Wellbeing Champions also adapt shared priorities to fit their communities. At the Kuala Lumpur Business Center, local activities supported mental and physical health. When people are well, they can do their best work — supporting their own growth while helping our business thrive.

People living with Parkinson’s, care partners, caregivers and center staff helped shape the layout and furniture at the Kirk Gibson Center for Parkinson’s Wellness in Michigan. The result reflects a central principle of inclusive design: design with people, rather than for them. Read the full story.

Collective action builds momentum

The actions highlighted throughout this report differ in scale, but they have a common belief: meaningful progress starts by listening, learning and working together. These actions build momentum toward a more resilient future for our business, communities and the world we share.
