Steelcase Partners with Ecomedes to Make Sustainable Product Sourcing Easier

The online platform will help Steelcase customers access environmental product information and identify solutions that help them achieve sustainability goals.

Grand Rapids, MI, Sept. 19, 2023 – To create better futures for the world we share, Steelcase, a global design and thought leader in the world of work, has partnered with online database Ecomedes to streamline how architects, designers and customers can access Steelcase product sustainability information to design workspaces with intention.

A free online resource, Ecomedes allows users to specify environmentally preferable products by supplying product data and automating product performance calculations that help customers achieve their sustainability goals. Through the platform, users can generate a full project evaluation based on products’ contributions to environmental goals and third-party standards.

Steelcase now features 294 office solutions on the Ecomedes website, including high-performance seating, height-adjustable desking, architectural and desking systems, storage, accessories and more. Solutions from the Steelcase family of brands, including Orangebox® and West Elm Work, can also be found in the Ecomedes database, providing users with even more eco-conscious choices that fit various aesthetics.

“We are excited to add such a wide range of products to the Ecomedes website and make it simple for people to find quality solutions to furnish their offices and remote workspaces without doing extra research to factor in sustainability,” said Mary Ellen Mika, director of sustainability for Steelcase. “As designers and makers, we understand that our work has an impact on the planet. We know we have a responsibility to do better for the world we share and therefore take critical, science-based actions across our entire enterprise to reduce our role in climate change—so that we can help build a more sustainable and resilient future.”

When visiting the Ecomedes website, users can easily sort by brand, category or popular standards and certifications like LEED® through the United States Building Council or WELL through International WELL Building Institute. Users can also sort by ecolabels like Declare, GreenCircle, Life Cycle Assessment, WaterSense Certified, Environmental Product Disclosures and more.

In addition to sharing its products on the Ecomedes database, Steelcase also lists 418 products on the Origin database and the Mindfulmaterials library; both databases provide information for the industry’s most sustainable products. Steelcase also continues to lead the contract office furniture industry with the most BIFMA LEVEL®-certified products, which certifies products to the highest standards for sustainable design.
