Our Legacy in Government Solutions
Over a Century of Trusted Partnership
For more than 100 years, Steelcase has been a dedicated partner to government customers, providing durable and innovative furniture solutions tailored to the unique needs of public sector environments. Our journey began in 1912, and by 1915, we secured our first government contract. This milestone marked the start of our enduring commitment to serving government institutions.
1914: Early Innovation for Government
Steelcase developed the Liberty Bond Box to safeguard critical government documents during WWI. This fireproof innovation marked our first step in designing secure storage for public sector needs.
1918: Victory Inspires Innovation
On November 11, 1918, The Allies claim victory over the Axis powers with the signing of the armistice. Afterwards, Victor (short for Victory), becomes the trademark of the new wastebasket.
1945: A Table Built for Diplomacy
The Japanese signed the surrender agreement to end WWII in front of General Douglas MacArthur on a Steelcase mess table aboard the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay. The table is on display at the Naval Academy Museum in Annapolis, Maryland.
1940s: Built for the Battlefield
During WWII, Steelcase supplied the U.S. Navy with lightweight, durable, space-efficient steel furniture. Our designs supported mission-critical operations aboard cruiser-class ships and beyond.
1946: Modular Thinking for Government Workspaces
Post-war, Steelcase launched the “Multiple 15″—sparking the first modular planning in our company’s history. Designed with standardization in mind, it helped government agencies adapt to evolving workspace needs and became an industry benchmark by 1960.
1940s: Naval Contracts Launch Seating Legacy
During WWII, Steelcase secured a major contract to furnish U.S. Naval cruisers with lightweight, durable steel furniture. This milestone marked our entry into government seating solutions—paving the way to becoming the world’s largest office seating manufacturer by 1955.
