From Library to Learning Hub
The Archbishop Spalding High School, built in the 1960s, was seeking to transform its outdated and underutilized library into a vibrant learning commons. The vision was to create a space that felt like home, where students could feel welcomed, comfortable, and relaxed. With the help of Steelcase and architect Jim Determan from Craig Gaulden Davis Architecture, the school breathed new life into the 6,500-square-foot space, making it a central social hub for the entire campus.
This newly versatile library supports various modes of learning, accommodating the diverse needs of the student body. Flexible furniture arrangements enable seamless transitions between different activities, from one-on-one tutoring sessions and small group collaborations to full classes and learning seminars. By fostering face-to-face interaction and creating an inclusive environment, the library enhances both academic and social experiences for all students.
