    Learning Has Changed

    Learning Has Changed

In our on-site research, we found cramped, static spaces designed for

    passive one-way learning:

    • tight rows of desks and chairs that inhibit movement and interaction
    • instructors confined to the front of the room
    • few opportunities to connect with students

    The classroom has to change

    • Research points to the fact that learning is enhanced when it is social and active.
    • A single approach to teaching is no longer enough.
    • Educators are turning to multiple pedagogies to support multiple learning styles.

    Students Have Changed

    Students Have Changed

    Students expect more

Today’s students desire an active learning environment—expecting more from their classrooms than ever before. They want their surroundings to support co-learning, co-creation and open discussion.

Educators are often faced with a tough choice: promote active learning or organize a classroom to fit as many students as possible. The existing classroom footprint is only so big, and there’s not much flexibility.

    Technology Has Changed

    Technology Has Changed

Students Use Technology All the Time

    Today’s Students

    • Digital natives
    • Comfortable using technology to display, share and present information

    Many of Today’s Instructors

    • Digital immigrants
    • Leveraging technology to support the pedagogy used in the classroom
    • There are concerns for those who are untrained and uncomfortable when asked to develop instructional design protocols for truly engaging learners.

    Important Classroom Considerations

    • Vertical surfaces to display content
    • Multiple projection surfaces and whiteboards
    • Various configurations

    Keeping pace with Active Learning

Steelcase conducted pre-and post-installation studies to evaluate node’s impact on the classroom experience. The two-month study involved a non-dedicated general-use classroom filled with traditional tablet arm chairs used for English, Greek, French, History of Film, Psychology and History classes. During the course of the study this single classroom was exposed to various instructors, students and subjects.

    Active Learning Spaces

Students prepare for a future no one can predict and jobs that, in many cases, haven’t been invented yet. Educators are responding to these diverse forces with a refreshing openness, adopting active learning and embracing new technology. Yet, both students and educators must operate in learning environments built for age-old ways.

Our Insights and Applications Guide provides the latest thinking on classroom design and learning spaces, including research, design principles and applications.
