But that also excluded a lot of people who didn\u2019t fit the average.\u00a0People at work expect \u2014 and deserve \u2014 diverse options that allow them to have the same opportunities as everyone else. The emerging field of inclusive design offers strategies for everyone at work to achieve their potential.<\/p>\n<h3>Autism at Work<\/h3>\n<p>A growing number of prominent companies \u2014 SAP, Hewlett Packard Enterprises, Microsoft, Ford, Deloitte and Caterpillar, to name just a few \u2014 have programs or pilots underway to hire and accommodate people with autism. These companies recognize that people on the autism\u00a0spectrum often have special skills and perspectives that represent untapped possibilities for both organizations and people on the spectrum.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_502811\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_502811\" class=\"wp-image wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1024px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-502811 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/steelcase-res.cloudinary.com\/image\/upload\/c_limit,dpr_auto,q_70,h_1024,w_1024\/v1579279502\/www.steelcase.com\/2020\/01\/17\/20-0133737.jpg\" alt=\"Trends 360 Illustration\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_502811\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #005b84\">The European Union estimates a shortage of 800,000 IT workers by 2020, specifically in fields including data analytics and IT services implementation \u2014 jobs with tasks that fit well with the unique abilities of some neurodiverse people, which includes those with autism, dyspraxia, dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"image-pair\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_493210\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_493210\" class=\"wp-image wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 1024px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-493210 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/steelcase-res.cloudinary.com\/image\/upload\/c_limit,dpr_auto,q_70,h_1024,w_1024\/v1579017133\/www.steelcase.com\/2020\/01\/14\/20-0133731.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_493210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #005b84\">German software company SAP has announced an intention to make 1% of its workforce neurodiverse by 2020 \u2014 a number representative of the approximate percentage of people with autism globally.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_493209\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_493209\" class=\"wp-image wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 1024px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-493209 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/steelcase-res.cloudinary.com\/image\/upload\/c_limit,dpr_auto,q_70,h_1024,w_1024\/v1579017131\/www.steelcase.com\/2020\/01\/14\/20-0133732.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_493209\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #005b84\">Within six months, workers with autism in the JPMorgan Mortgage Banking Technology division were doing the equivalent work of people with three years\u2019 experience\u2014and were even 50 percent more productive.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_502813\" aria-labelledby=\"figcaption_attachment_502813\" class=\"wp-image wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1024px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-502813 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/steelcase-res.cloudinary.com\/image\/upload\/c_limit,dpr_auto,q_70,h_1024,w_1024\/v1579279682\/www.steelcase.com\/2020\/01\/17\/20-0133740.jpg\" alt=\"Trends 360 Illustration\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption id=\"figcaption_attachment_502813\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #005b84\">32% of 2,000 United Kingdom workers surveyed said their employer did not offer any additional support for those in the workforce with neurodevelopmental disorders.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Employing people with autism calls for some often-minor adjustments to the work environment. And yet, many companies don\u2019t recognize the need or what steps to take.<\/p>\n<p>The Autism ASPECTSS\u2122 Design Index is the world\u2019s first evidence-based set of autism-specific design guidelines. Among its suggestions for creating autism-friendly spaces are noise reduction, clearly defined zones, logical spatial sequencing and wayfinding, and customizable spaces for respite.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-493215 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/steelcase-res.cloudinary.com\/image\/upload\/c_limit,dpr_auto,q_70,h_1024,w_1024\/v1579018112\/www.steelcase.com\/2020\/01\/14\/20-0133735.png\" alt=\"Trends 360 Illustration\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Finding Community in Coworking<\/h3>\n<p>The number of coworking spaces worldwide is projected to reach 25,968 by 2022, an increase of 42%, according to the Coworking Resources Global Coworking Growth Study 2019. In addition to hot desking and dedicated workstations for working parents, Trehaus offers children the chance to explore various activities in a play space. Studies also show that a brief nap helps our brains think more clearly. Some offices have started incorporating places for rest and rejuvenation, but some people hesitate to use them, fearing perceptions of slacking.
