Empath on Tour: Dispatch One

Empath is in the midst of a tour around the country, stopping in 13 markets to share Steelcase Health’s research and insights around human-centered design in healthcare. There have two events so far and both have received rave reviews, thanks to the help of local partners BSA Lifestructures in Indianapolis and Target Commercial Interiors in Minneapolis.

Michael Wilson, Area Healthcare Manager and host of the Indianapolis events, said the presentations were very well received by all three groups involved: end customers, A&D, and registered nurses. “Everyone said they were refreshed to hear our statistics and research, and to engage them and demonstrate the research and insights in practice with the Smartphone Physical and the third-age suit was terrific.” (MLive.com recently covered the Indianapolis event.)

Attendees listened to a brief presentation of Steelcase Health’s recently released State of Clinicians & Nurses Report, which examines the day-to-day job-related injuries clinicians face, and explored healthcare solutions that can reduce risk and improve patient care.

They also witnessed patient transfers firsthand, using Steelcase Health’s version of a ‘third-age suit’. The suit’s braces restrict movement in the patient’s legs and back, simulating what it would be like if they were elderly, recovering from a recent surgery, or suffering from a flare-up of debilitating pain or arthritis. This demonstration of limited mobility serves to highlight Empath’s ease of use for both the caregiver and the patient no matter what the healthcare situation.

Benjamin Pratt, a Steelcase Regional Sales Manager, attended the event in Minneapolis at the Target Commercial Interiors showroom. He said, “The visual demonstrations were great in telling the entire story of the applications, versus just presenting the research. We had three vignettes set up with Empath – an infusion space, an exam room, and a patient room – and these were very realistic in showing the versatility of Empath and in engaging a diverse audience.”

Often times it’s easier to understand and digest research and statistics by seeing and hearing them than by just read about them. Come see Steelcase Health and Empath at one of these upcoming events!
