And the stakes are high. Make the wrong balance of choices and employees may leave in search of a better fit.<\/p>\n<p>So, what are organizations doing? Why are some moving forward while others wait? And what\u2019s giving some leaders confidence to make decisions amid uncertainty? New spring 2021 Steelcase research asked decision-makers in eight countries\u00b9 to give us a pulse check on what\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>BENCHMARKING ORGANIZATIONS&#8217; EFFORTS<\/h2>\n<p>Many study participants confirmed that the pandemic accelerated the pace of change. &#8220;This is nothing we ever would have talked about in the absence of COVID. Companies that expect higher levels of remote work (Work From Home Heavy and In-Office Light) also expect to increase their square footage before the end of 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>19% <\/strong>Work From Home Heavy\u00b3 organizations expect to increase square footage<br \/>\n<strong>29% <\/strong>In-Office Light\u00b3 organizations expect to increase square footage<br \/>\n<strong>18%<\/strong>\u00a0In-Office Medium\u00b3 organizations expect to increase square footage<br \/>\n<strong>16%<\/strong>\u00a0In-Office Heavy\u00b3 organizations expect to increase square footage<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wellbeing Drives Choice Making<br \/>\n<\/strong>Leaders also say the wellbeing of people and their communities will influence workplace choices post-pandemic:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>72%\u00a0<\/strong>Infection control will become a factor in furniture choices<br \/>\n<strong>70%\u00a0<\/strong>Sustainability will increase in importance for furniture choices<br \/>\n<strong>68%\u00a0<\/strong>Employee wellbeing will be a greater consideration in workplace design<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>WHY SOME ORGANIZATIONS MOVE FASTER<\/h2>\n<p>While many organizations are planning for change, some are moving more quickly and with more confidence than others. Eighty-one percent plan to start implementing their new workspace strategy in 2021. Yet, only 38% are extremely confident in their workspace strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows organizations emerging from COVID with faster, more holistic decision-making capabilities are doing so because they already have a strong alliance between human resources, information technology and facilities management.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pull-quote pull-quote-center \"><p>&#8220;It\u2019s clear that we need to attract people back to the office\u2026 and it is also clear we are trying to optimize that with as little cost as possible.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Study participant<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>New work. New spaces.<br \/>\n<\/strong>While globally organizations are approaching if they assign workstations in different ways, large US organizations (10,000+ employees) are overwhelmingly planning changes to provide for more flexibility and collaboration. Eighty-nine percent are shifting to more unassigned workstations (also true in Germany at 55%), and 67% will add more space for collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>Research suggests leaders realize the workplace is an important catalyst to facilitate connections between colleagues (in-person and remote) and between individuals and the organization. Decision-makers around the world expect certain areas of the workplace will increase in importance including:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>71%<\/strong> Tech upgrades for enclaves<br \/>\n<strong>69%<\/strong> High-performance ancillary spaces (shared spaces)<br \/>\n<strong>69%<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelcase.com\/eu-en\/spaces\/work-better\/collaboration-spaces\/\">Collaboration spaces<\/a> (in general)<br \/>\n<strong>68%<\/strong> Hybrid collaboration spaces<\/p>\n<p>And even while accounting for a more fluid future, organizations planning to increase flexibility for employees post-COVID expect team and individual work to still be supported by the office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>69%<\/strong> Meetings (informative)<br \/>\n<strong>55%<\/strong> Focus<br \/>\n<strong>49%<\/strong> Learning<br \/>\n<strong>47%<\/strong> Collaboration (generative)<br \/>\n<strong>29%<\/strong> Socializing<br \/>\n<strong>7%<\/strong> Rejuvenation<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-72388 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/steelcase-res.cloudinary.com\/image\/upload\/v1613652540\/www.steelcase.com\/eu-en\/2021\/02\/18\/21-0152909.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>HOW ORGANIZATIONS BUILD CONFIDENCE<\/h2>\n<p>To build decision-making confidence, organizations are also looking for ways to incorporate the employee\u2019s voice. As behavior patterns continue to evolve, decision-makers are relying more heavily on measurements \u2014 monitoring use patterns and ultimately how fluid the environment is to accommodate fluctuating employee populations. In fact, 90% expect to measure the utilization of their workspaces.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pull-quote pull-quote-center \"><p>&#8220;Data is hugely important to us. We can tell down to the neighborhood\u2026 We really are sizing that and then designing that toward the needs of each group.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Study participant<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Prioritizing Prototypes<br \/>\n<\/strong>The future office will be much more planned. People will be making intentional decisions around what they will be doing \u2014 where, when and how often. But by bringing together HR, IT and facilities, listening to employees, measuring new behaviors and experimenting with prototypes, organizations are able to take steps forward, rev their competitive engines and move toward a better work experience for their people and teams.<\/p>\n<div class=\"u-shaded u-shaded--light\">\n<h6><em>1. Countries included are Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, United Kingdom, United States.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>2. For companies that expect to dictate work from home schedules, France, Germany, and Australia expect to primarily do so by individuals or roles. The US and India expect to do so by department or team.<br \/>\n3.
