Ludwig joined Ralf Groene, general manager of device design at Microsoft, for a panel discussion ahead of the New York Times\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newworksummit.com\/\">2017 New Work Summit<\/a> about how leaders can harness the creativity of their people and their organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The moderated discussion sponsored by Steelcase took place on the same day <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/devices\/category\/microsoft-surface\/#JwHYYBDHRKgjMVTW.97\">Microsoft<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelcase.com\/asia-en\/microsoft-steelcase\/\">Steelcase<\/a> announced a new partnership to support creativity in the workplace. The two companies unveiled Creative Spaces &#8212; a collection of work spaces designed to foster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelcase.com\/asia-en\/blog\/creating-conditions-for-creativity-in-the-workplace\/\">creative thinking at work<\/a>. According to research, 72 percent of people believe their future success depends on their ability to be creative. Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/content\/dam\/acom\/en\/max\/pdfs\/AdobeStateofCreate_2016_Report_Final.pdf\">Adobe\u2019s State of Create<\/a> reports 83 percent of leaders say greater creativity leads to more innovation and 73 percent say it leads to financial success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese days I think creativity might be your most valuable asset as an individual and as a company,\u201d said Groene. \u201cSo many things have been optimized. Creating something new as an individual and as an organization, those are the things that unlock great potential and great value for companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Support the Ways People Create<\/h2>\n<p>Compartmentalized jobs where people specialize in a single task do not represent the complex problems and systems most businesses face today. Research tells us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelcase.com\/asia-en\/blog\/creating-conditions-for-creativity-in-the-workplace\/\">creative work<\/a> has a rhythm. Instead of a linear process, people move back-and-forth through an iterative process. Sometimes they need to work alone. Other times they need support from a large group or a single colleague.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve moved past one-size-fits-all. There\u2019s not one-size-fits-all moments throughout the day,\u201d explained Ludwig. \u201cI may need a private office for an hour, but then I\u2019m traveling or meeting with other people and it\u2019s just wasted real estate. When I don\u2019t need space, it should be shared and used by others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Creative Spaces is an ecosystem of spaces designed to support different work modes throughout the day. The spaces are embedded with tools and technology to enhance focus, two-person collaboration, hands-on making, group ideation and individual respite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to allow people to choose the spaces where someone\u2019s mind is most productive,\u201d said Groene. \u201cWe realized there\u2019s so much value in coming together as people in space. The idea to create the space based on the modes of working and thinking hasn\u2019t happened at this level.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Engage Your People, Help Ideas Flourish<\/h2>\n<p>Ludwig says they are seeing companies move away from the traditional corporate office to something similar to a creative studio. Leaders want to ignite the feeling of a start-up culture within their organizations. They are looking for ways to engage their people and help great ideas flourish. Creativity is a process in which everyone can engage. As Groene put it, it\u2019s not just for designers like himself, it\u2019s for anyone working to solve a problem or to create something new. \u201cA good idea might come from an unexpected place,\u201d said Groene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you create ideas, identify them, foster them and make them tangible? That\u2019s what creates value in organizations today,\u201d said Ludwig. \u201cRecognizing there\u2019s opportunity for creativity and problem solving by everyone is a key concept leaders can communicate to their people. Giving them the tools and spaces is a strong message to send to them that we\u2019re all about unlocking your potential.
