{"id":25051,"date":"2019-03-27T00:22:55","date_gmt":"2019-03-26T13:22:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.steelcase.com\/asia-en\/?p=25051"},"modified":"2023-02-09T00:10:32","modified_gmt":"2023-02-08T13:10:32","slug":"the-future-by-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.steelcase.com\/asia-en\/research\/articles\/topics\/culture-talent\/the-future-by-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"The Future by the Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Millennials \u2013 and how they want to work \u2013 have been making headlines for years. But, as Gen Z starts entering the workforce and the war for talent tops the list of what keeps leaders up at night, the question becomes: How does the workforce of tomorrow envision the future of work?<\/p>\n<p>Organizations around the world aren\u2019t just fighting to attract top talent. They\u2019re struggling to keep them. <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/epsc\/publications\/strategic-notes\/future-work_en#h-1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research<\/a> shows that patterns in work tenure are changing. Just last year in France, 20 percent of employees said they planned to stay with their employer for life, down from 30 percent just two years prior. In Germany, the drop was 15 percent (from 40 percent to 25 percent).<\/p>\n<p>So, how <em>does<\/em> the next generation want to work? And, how can the workplace support those desires?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s exactly what 23 students from the AMD Academy of Fashion &amp; Design in Hamburg set out to define. In an initiative driven by <a href=\"https:\/\/ait-xia-dialog.de\/ait-dialog-print-kategorie\/ait-dialog-magazin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AIT-Dialog<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.b-k-i.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brandhem + krumery interior architecture<\/a> and Steelcase, the students were tasked with conceptualizing and creating a common vision of the future of work.<\/p>\n<h3>Guiding principles<\/h3>\n<p>During several workshops, the students defined the guiding principles around what their ideal work experience would look and feel like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flexibility and freedom<\/li>\n<li>Creativity, fun and wellbeing at work<\/li>\n<li>Good work-life balance<\/li>\n<li>Networking within hierarchies and disciplines<\/li>\n<li>Working independently within existing work structures<\/li>\n<li>Tolerant and open working styles, free of rigidity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The concept<\/h3>\n<p>Once they defined the principles, they got to work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started by thinking about the different areas we spend our time throughout the day and how they\u2019re changing in a dynamic way,\u201d said Pia Schwarz, a student involved in the project. \u201cAll three areas \u2013 home, work and free time \u2013 are equally important in our life, so we wanted to represent them using three equally sized areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They imagined a future where everyday life dictates where and how people work. Their final \u201cWork To Go\u201d concept combines three individual spaces \u2013 \u201cOffice\u201d, \u201cHome\u201d and \u201cFree Space\u201d \u2013 all connected by an area they called -->\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><!-- .slide -->\n\n\t\t<\/div><!-- .panel-type-slider -->\n<p>Their user-centered approach led them to create flexible spaces that empowered users to decide where and when to work. Meanwhile, digital and analog devices in all four areas facilitated individual work, learning and networking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to be able to work from anywhere and easily integrate family life with our professional life\u201d, said Nicola Voss, a student involved in the project. \u201cCommunication was also key to allow for exchange and learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Concept to creation<\/h3>\n<p>The students worked with brandhem + krumery interior designer Anja Rosenberg, AIT Dialog and Steelcase\u2019s Joachim M\u00fceller Wedekind to bring their concept to life at Orgatec, a biennial international trade fair in Cologne.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at their work:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25061 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/steelcase-res.cloudinary.com\/image\/upload\/c_limit,dpr_auto,q_70,h_1024,w_1024\/v1552579891\/www.steelcase.com\/eu-en\/2019\/03\/14\/19-0117711.jpg\" alt=\"Work To Go\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Office<\/strong><br \/>\nThis space is designed to encourage communication, structure, information and focus.
