The Steelcase / on office sm:art competition culminated in a fantastic finalists' ceremony at the Steelcase London WorkLife in mid-September which saw the showroom transformed into a mini art gallery for the night.

The quality of the 10 finalists work was so high that the judging panel decided to award two runners-up prizes of the iconic Steelcase Think chair – the lucky winners were Natalie MacBride, Zoe Ianosos and Lauren Hull of Liverpool-based Hyendesign with 'The Colony' (see left) and Andy Thirsk of Think Tank in London with ‘The Office Space Invaders’ (see left).

'The Colony' used TNT* elements to create a dynamic form, continuity of space and bold colours to represent a myriad of zones entwined which house a multitude of occupants including the nomads, the creators and the logical thinkers. The 'Office Space Invaders' offered a tailored version of a screen shot form the arcade classic - space invaders. The idea behind the piece was to focus on the war between design and functionality within the office environment.

The overall winner - or in this case, winners - were Scott McNeeley and Simon Paddison of BDP with the highly imaginative ‘Think Tanker’ (see left) which they described as something that ‘provides individuals and corporations a unique and exclusive working environment to encourage and harbour ideas through collective team thinking in an isolated, secure and private moving structure.’ The judges, who included Emma Mitchell, head of Steelcase design, esteemed architectural photographer Tim Soar and acting on office editor Elizabeth Choppin, were unanimous in their decision, particularly praising the overall concept and execution of 'The Think Tanker'. The winning team won an all expenses paid trip to Amsterdam, inckluding a visit to the Amsterdam WorkLife.
