Environmental

  • Elective Elements 6 is MBDC Silver Cradle to Cradle certified. This is the first C2C certification for an entire powered workstation in the contract furniture industry. The Cradle to Cradle Product Certification places a major emphasis on the human and ecological health impacts of a material's ingredients, and focuses on the ability to recycle or safely compost that material.  In addition to stringent material criteria, which includes prohibiting the use of  PVC, companies seeking this certification are required to meet strict criteria for social fairness and corporate practices and ethics.
  • Elective Elements 6 is level™ 1 certified to the BIFMA e3 sustainability standard. According to BIFMA, the level™ conformance mark ensures a comprehensive, independent and impartial assessment of the environmental and social impacts of a product’s manufacture. level makes it easy to identify products that have been evaluated against a consensus-based, multi-attribute sustainability standard.
  • Elective Elements 6 is SCS Indoor Advantage™ certified for indoor air quality and may contribute to LEED® certification for its reusability and recyclable content. Steelcase has LEED-accredited professionals that can help with your LEED applications.

Steelcase set an industry precedent when we constructed the world's first manufacturing plant to receive LEED certification. When we began the construction planning process for our new wood manufacturing plant in West Michigan back in 2001, LEED criteria had not been interpreted within the unique context of a manufacturing environment. Working closely with the Wood Furniture Environmental Brochure.

Life-cycle approach
We're working with the University of Michigan's Center for Sustainable Systems to complete life cycle assessments for all of our major products to better understand the environmental impact of every stage of a product's life.

Materials chemistry
Together with McDonough Braungart Chemistry (MBDC), one of the world's leading sustainable design firms, we're assessing all of the chemicals and materials used in our products - evaluating them against 19 human and environmental health criteria. As a result, we're forming a cradle-to-cradle strategy for all of our products.

Recyclability
We select materials that can be recycled at the end of a product's use and then design in such a way that they can be easily disassembled and separated. To simplify recycling, we minimize co-mingled components, consider the number and type of fasteners and make disassembly easy with common hand tools. Adhesives are eliminated where possible. Recyclable parts are clearly marked.
