Certifications and the information behind them help us communicate product attributes. They can also help you choose products that are environmentally sustainable and just right for your project.
Introduced in 2005 by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC), Cradle to Cradle certification is an industry benchmark that we actively pursue to help designers and customers specify and purchase products to meet their sustainability goals. We believe that wood products from sustainable sources are excellent choices for customers seeking to make good decisions - good for the planet. Steelcase supports chain of custody programs as a way to ensure our customers receive wood from sustainable sources. As a partner in the development of the ANSI/BIFMA e3 furniture sustainability standard, we introduced the first level 3 certified product in the industry. Steelcase level Certified products are accredited by third-party certifiers using a point-based system that spans social responsibility, energy use, materials selection, and human and ecosystem health impacts.

We pursue industry-independent, third-party testing and indoor air quality certification for many of our products and materials through the SCS Global Services' Indoor Advantage™ program:
- provides credits toward the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED certification
- demonstrates compliance to ANSI/BIFMA criteria for low-emitting furniture
- Indoor Advantage Gold certification also demonstrates compliance to California 01350, ASHRAE 189.1, and CHPS Collaborative for High Performance Schools Criteria for furniture.
